A new chapter in Ybor City’s story is being written, and it involves books, baked goods, and a whole lot of community spirit. Sisters Teresa and Laurie Rodriguez, third-generation Tampeñas with deep ties to Ybor’s historic cigar-making roots, are working tirelessly to open Bookends: Literature & Libations. Their dream is to turn a 1920s bungalow at 2208 E 2nd Ave. into a hub for literature lovers, complete with a small kitchen offering baked goods to enjoy with curated reads.
However, the journey has been anything but smooth. Since purchasing the property in April 2022, the Rodriguez sisters have faced numerous permitting challenges. The addition of the kitchen has sparked regulatory debates over whether the space is classified as a restaurant, slowing their progress. Despite these hurdles, they have secured nearly $100,000 in historic matching grants to restore the property—but with a critical deadline in December, time is running out.
Even without a permanent space, Bookends is already creating ripples in the community through pop-up events and book clubs, keeping the literary spirit alive in Ybor. Their eventual opening promises to add a unique space where Tampa’s rich history and vibrant literary culture meet.
